Blue Barn Rescue was established January 2024. We are located in North Salem, NY and serve mainly Westchester and Fairfield counties, however we have adopters and surrenderers come from all over the Tri-State area and Massachusetts. We primarily rescue guinea pigs, rabbits, poultry and barnyard animals. Our Directer is a veterinary technician, so our focus is on animals that are sick, have special needs, seniors or pregnant; as well is owner surrenders, as those are the animals that tend to be “dumped” when people become desperate. Animals that are deemed unadoptable due to age or medical issues live out their lives on our farm sanctuary. Adoptable animals are placed into loving forever homes. The need for rescue for this animal population has proven to be astronomical. So far this year, we have rescued about 230 animals, 96 live on site at the sanctuary, 22 live off site at our temporary rabbit sanctuary, 80 have been adopted to loving homes, and about 35 animals are in foster care awaiting their forever home.
Since we were established only this year, we do not have any major donors or grants, and have been primarily funding the rescue ourselves. This has been a major strain as cost of food, medical care and spaying and neutering alone are very expensive and barely manageable. We still need to build a rabbit sanctuary on site to accommodate the large population of unadoptable rabbits, as well as a bachelor coop for roosters, as they are dumped constantly and will fight in the presence of hens. We are overwhelmed with requests for surrendering roosters, and are having a hard time managing the six we have in the presence of our hens. We also need to build an additional shed-row to house and quarantine barnyard animals.
