In May 2023, the folks who brought us Purdy’s Farmer and The Fish opened a small takeout barbeque joint in the growing business district of Bedford Hills. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, at Br’ers BBQ, you can grab a breakfast sandwich in the morning (yes, there’s one with brisket), return for lunch to pick up a burger or chicken club (among other sandwiches & offerings), and then have a variety of shareable items delivered for dinner.

With a female pitmaster (who is a CIA graduate) at the helm, Br’ers BBQ has managed to win over the palates of barbeque lovers and change the minds of those who claim that style of food isn’t for them. In fact, one of our judges said they don’t typically enjoy smoked foods, but they were pleasantly surprised by the immense juiciness and flavor in Br’ers BBQ’s smoked meats and fish. Their bestsellers are their brisket, which is smoked for 12 hours, and their fried chicken.

Off the Record

The restaurant is named after Br’er (an abbreviation for brother) Rabbit, a trickster from African-American folklore. In these tales, Br’er Rabbit is a small yet clever animal who outwits larger, stronger and duller animals. Many believe the tale teaches us that intelligence can win over evil.

Runner-up: Cafe 117, Bedford Hills

She has a magazine journalism degree (yes, that's a real thing) from the University of Georgia and has written for countless national publications, ranging from SELF to The Washington Post. Gia desperately wishes schools still taught grammar. Also, she wants everyone to know they can delete the word "that" from about 90% of their sentences, and there's no such thing as "first annual." When she's not running her media empire, Gia enjoys spending quality time with friends and family, laughing at her crazy dog and listening to a good podcast. She thanks multiple alarms, fermented grapes and her amazing husband for helping her get through each day. Her love languages are food and humor.
