Our Founders Letter

You may have noticed that our name has changed. Rest assured, it’s still the two of us at the helm. We didn’t come to this decision lightly – it was made carefully over several months. The reason for our name change is simple: our magazine has quickly grown from a publication based out of Katonah to the most talked about and read publication in northern Westchester. And as we continue to grow, it’s time for our name to grow too; it should reflect who we are as a publication.

In under two years, we have made so many meaningful connections with people and businesses in our area. We have more cultural partnerships and tell more in-depth and compelling stories than any other local publication. Our videos have quickly grown from a little something we did on the side to an entirely separate part of our business. And we’re launching an app this month that will give you discounts to businesses throughout northern Westchester.

The more we do, the clearer it becomes that our name should reflect our larger coverage area.

We attribute our rapid growth to the meaningful connections we’ve made, so it’s a fitting theme for this issue. When we chose this as our topic, it was based on our belief that meaningful connections are what make the holiday season special, so we wanted to encourage our readers to actively make time during this busy season to connect with others. But as we were wrapping up this issue, Israel was attacked by Palestinian militants led by Hamas. While one of us is Jewish, it was the non-Jewish half who suggested including something about Israel in this letter – not to take a stand politically, but to take a stand morally. This is a human issue – a tragic human issue.

We don’t support violence, hatred or murder, and as tensions rise, we want to encourage you to reach out and connect with your Jewish friends and neighbors – many of them are not okay. They are finding it difficult to go about their daily lives, concentrate at work, eat regularly and/or sleep well. The same is true for all others impacted by this tragedy. They need your support. They need those meaningful connections that are always important, but they’re even more important now. So please, reach out. Be a rainbow in somebody else’s cloud.*

There’s no delicate way to transition from terrorism to our holiday issue, so forgive our awkwardness. The best we could come up with was that meaningful connections can be made in a variety of ways: a text, a phone call, a lunch date or a gift. What’s important is to show that person you’re thinking about them and you care. So, we hope you’ll be inspired by the stories we tell about the meaningful connections people have made and the impact they’ve had. And, our holiday gift guide is back by popular demand, along with a story on how to buy great gifts so you can show you care and create that meaningful connection.

Yes, we’re all about connections. It’s what we do. And it’s what makes this magazine and our towns so special.

So welcome to the new Connect to Northern Westchester. It’s wildly brilliant.

Fancying a Feline?

Fancying a Feline?

Writing by Dr. Sarah J. Cutler Felines are fantastic friends. They’re the cat’s meow, if you will.  While there are millions of cats in the U.S., no two are the same, and there is a wide range of temperaments and physical attributes. Still, most cats have retained much of the instinctual behaviors and physical attributes of their wild ancestor, Felis ...
The Quiet Man with the Loud Voice

The Quiet Man with the Loud Voice

Writing  and photography by Justin Negard "They call me the quiet guy,” says painter Richard Chandler. “But I’m really not. If you pay attention, I’m actually making a lot of noise.” Chandler is a man of contradictions. His slender appearance and thick-rimmed glasses are unassuming yet visually striking. He speaks in soft tones yet serves as the voice of many ...
Meaningful Holiday Connections

Meaningful Holiday Connections

Writing & Photography by Amy Baker Artwork by Marilena Perilli The holidays are often filled with gatherings – some of which we love and some of which we loathe, numerous activities we’re required to attend, a rush to complete overwhelming shopping lists and an unnecessary pressure to make things “perfect.” But, this year, instead of giving into the chaos, we ...
A Taste of Home

A Taste of Home

Writing by Kaitlyn Hardy  Photography by Justin Negard It’s 9:00 in the morning, about three hours into baker Nora Gyarmathy’s day. Loaves of bread have been proofing for hours; linzer cookie dough sits in the fridge; gluten-free chocolate s’mores cookies lay upon a silver baking sheet, wafting their irresistible scent through 351 Bakery’s kitchen – it’s Gyarmathy’s manifestation of a ...
A Day in Saratoga Springs

A Day in Saratoga Springs

Writing & photography by Justin Negard When you think about Saratoga Springs, odds are, you think of charging racehorses. You probably imagine the horns of the race track blowing and the roaring crowds cheering their stallion of choice. And that makes sense because this town has become synonymous with horse racing. It’s a well-deserved reputation, as a trip to Saratoga ...

Dear Luz #7

Writing  by Luz Michelle Artwork by Tal Doron Dear Luz, I don’t think I can handle another winter in New York. It’s just too cold for me! I’ve lived here my entire life, and I’m ready to pack up my gloves, hats and scarves for good. But the problem is that I still have kids at home, so I can’t ...

Sugar Rush

Writing  by Cathy Deutsch Artwork by Elizabeth Gourlay Photography by Justin Negard Holidays – especially Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas – are often where we gather with family and friends around the dining table in celebration of honored customs and traditions. How to Give Great Gifts

How to Give Great Gifts

Writing  by Josephine D'ippolito Artwork by Marilena Perilli There’s a certain pleasure that comes with giving the perfect gift.  It could be a hard-to-find toy for a nephew, a first (or signed) edition for a voracious reader or a meal delivery subscription for the friend who burns toast. Whatever it is, matching the right gift with a loved one can ...
Shining Star

Shining Star

Writing  by Gia Miller Photography by Justin Negard At 6:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning in 2015, Josephine Hollander, then a fifth grader living in Los Angeles, began sorting through trash bags filled with clothing. As the morning went on, the piles of bags grew to about the size of small houses, but Hollander, along with her friend Keira and Keira’s ...
Transforming Lives

Transforming Lives

Writing  by Emily Meehan and Clare McAlpine When you walk up to the doors of Friends of Karen headquarters in North Salem, the first thing you might notice is their walkway – a “path of compassion” filled with several hundred dedicated bricks featuring loving messages and tributes from supporters. It demonstrates how this local organization has changed the lives of ...
