A museum and independent research library located in the heart of New York City, the Morgan Library & Museum began as the personal library of financier, collector, and cultural benefactor Pierpont Morgan. In March of 1924, eleven years after Pierpont Morgan’s death, his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr., known as Jack, made the momentous decision to dedicate his father’s library and the collections housed within it to the public. With the indomitable Belle da Costa Greene, Pierpont Morgan’s librarian and the Morgan’s first director, Jack endeavored to make the Library “preeminent.” The year 2024 marks 100 years of the Morgan Library & Museum as a public institution. With rare and noteworthy collections; a world-class research center for scholars, artists, writers, and more; and a rich calendar of exhibitions and programs, the Morgan’s multifaceted work reaches audiences across the globe.
