What’s one thing your customers don’t know you do behind the scenes?
I am constantly reading new medical updates, often diving into a “rabbit hole” to see how they tie into other aspects of medicine, such as nutrition and longevity. I then work on applying new management options to real patient situations and often call mentors to discuss their insights.
On a personal note, patients may not know that I don’t have it all together. As a mother, I am constantly trying to balance being present for my family while also nurturing my practice, which I treat like another child. These daily challenges allow me to better understand the similar struggles my patients face. Finally, I often replenish from a long day by switching mental gears to catch up on entertainment news and fashion updates.
What’s something you do that seems small but makes a huge difference?
Keeping an open mind with my patients makes a huge difference. I recognize that they have the most insight into their health, and I aim to listen intently, asking as many questions as possible without jumping to preconceived conclusions. At the end of the day, my patients are teaching and guiding me on their health journey, and I am merely helping to navigate the right direction.
I hold the physician role as an honor and am humbled by my patients’ trust, which is why I named my practice Asira, meaning “to be humbled” in Arabic. I will always try to listen, think of their best interest, and do a deep dive into their health to validate their concerns, while also knowing when to involve other capable physicians for a patient-centered collaborative team. We also take a 360 degrees approach to our patients and look at all aspects of their life and how these factors influence their well-being and how we can take a holistic approach.
If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing instead?
I have many interests outside of medicine. I have always connected with the study of art history and would love to be living in Rome one day, studying and curating art pieces. Another interest is writing, as I truly enjoy composing articles for various publications. I’m also an avid Law and Order: SVU viewer and would love to act on that show to solve a mystery or two.
What’s the best advice you ever received?
The best advice I ever received was to listen to my intuition and listen to the patient’s intuition. Always stay humble, remain a student of medicine, and remember that the patient-doctor relationship is a sacred one.
When did you open (month & year)?
In NYC, March 2012, and in Jefferson Valley, April 2016.
Describe your business in three words.
Humanistic. Patient-centered. Communicative.
What’s something your business does differently than anyone else?
We strive to practice medicine the way it used to be practiced: with intention, validation, and indispensable time for communication.
What’s one thing people often say when they first walk in?
People often comment on how beautiful and intimate our office spaces are, and how they don’t feel like a standard medical office.
What is your most popular item/service?
Pioneering advancements in cosmetic procedures, such as minimally invasive labiaplasties. Also, hormone balancing for postpartum, perimenopausal, and postmenopausal women, focusing on improving quality and longevity.
What is something you wish more people knew about you and/or your business?
We will always have our patients’ best interest at heart, and their quality of life and longevity are the central pillars of my medical practice.
