What’s one thing your customers don’t know you do behind the scenes?

I choose every item that we sell in the store personally. and I travel around the country visiting tiny stores and makers. I am always looking for great, unique products to bring to Katonah.

What’s one item you always have on hand?

Birthday candles and cards—the one thing you always need at the last minute.

What’s something you do that seems small but makes a huge difference?

We make sure every customer knows they are welcome, whether they’re grabbing a quick cup of coffee or shopping for a book or gift, we are always ready with something special and unique and take time to hear what they are looking for.

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing instead?

I’m a social worker and have worked with teens for many years. I still get the most pleasure from helping non-profits and kids when they are in the store, and letting teens know they belong here. I love chatting with customers and always have an ear for people when they come in and need someone to talk to.

What’s something your business does differently than anyone else?

Every experience is personalized, whether it is a barista remembering your daily favorite or a bookseller making a recommendation you will love.

What’s one thing people often say when they first walk in?

Oh, it’s SO CUTE!

What’s the unsung hero of your business (a tool, a system, a habit)?

Our staff—they are kind and funny and make people smile every day.

What is your most popular item/service?

Our coffee specials. Our baristas change our specials frequently, and they delight in not only putting time into thinking about the taste and seasonal desires of customers, but also in naming the drinks with clever themes.

What is something you wish more people knew about you and/or your business?

That we have ice cream. All year. And milkshakes. And it’s wildly delicious.
