The Music Issue

July / August 2025

When we launched this magazine over three years ago, we had no idea how much our lives would change. From learning about so many incredible people in our community through interviews or filming or meeting our readers and neighbors when they visit our booth at summer music festivals, we’re often amazed by what a single day brings. And we feel so fortunate that we get to work with some incredibly talented people as our business continues to grow.
This music issue was no different. These past two months, we’ve produced an endless amount of videos, welcomed four high school seniors for their end-of-year internship and produced our music issue. It was fun, but a lot of work.
On the drive home from interviewing the 10-year-old guitar phenom Bay, we started talking about what songs we relate to these days. We then challenged ourselves to put together a playlist that illustrates our lives, and we decided to share it with you. So here it is, in no particular order.

How To Dance When You Can't Dance

How To Dance When You Can’t Dance

Rhythm starts with trust, not talent By Max Chwatko Artwork by Molly McGarvey I've always been the kind of person who claps on the wrong beat at concerts. It’s not that I’m rhythmically hopeless—my limbs just haven’t caught up with my ears. So, when I set out to write about beginner dance, I was stepping into an unfamiliar world. I ...

Writing by Isabella Aranda Garcia Photography by Justin Negard "Is it alright if I put you on speaker while I tattoo?” asks Gianna Nicholson, artist and owner of Bee Inked Tattoo Parlor in Yorktown Heights. Inside her studio, time doesn’t just pass—it’s shaped, shaded and inked into permanence. Whether she’s sketching a new concept, tattooing a client or sculpting for ...

Jill Freedman Unleashed

Legendary documentary photographer Jill Freedman—who was famous for her gritty, compassionate documentation of the circus, FDNY and NYPD—loved dogs. “I never saw them as little furry people,” she once wrote. “They are nothing like people. They are like dogs, a nicer species. I love watching them, playing with them, knowing them. I wish I were more like a dog, but ...

Music can regulate the nervous system, reduce pain and heal trauma Writing by Anastasia Mills Healy  Artwork by Justin Negard As a graduate student in 1978, when Dr. Concetta Tomaino was assigned to play atmospheric music for the mostly nonresponsive residents of a nursing home in Brooklyn, the staff who fed them through tubes and tied them to their wheelchairs ...

Healthy Hair Never Goes Out of Style

Healthy Hair Never Goes Out of Style

Some people are born to question the status quo. When they see a problem, they don’t accept it; they ask why. Then, they ponder how they can fix it. They imagine alternatives. They explore unconventional possibilities. They innovate. Paulo Lanfredi is one of those people. After cutting hair for 15 years, he began wondering why thin, dry or damaged hair ...
