Before this year, I’d never been to a pride event before, and I didn’t know there were any in Northern Westchester. I felt alone, and like my community didn’t support me. But now that I’ve learned what’s around us, I want to shout it from the rooftops….or write it about online. Here’s what’s on the gay agenda for June, so everyone can feel seen and heard.
Week of June 1

A story about how love triumphs over hate, “Mama Bears” started as a Facebook group, made by the mothers of LGBTQ+ children, and it continues the fight for our rights. The film follows some of the moms who grew up being taught that being gay or trans is a sin, but their children taught them how to love.
Time: 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Place: Katonah Space
June 3
Run, don’t walk to Pound Ridge’s second color run. For the competitive folks, there will be a 5k road race at 9:00a.m., and for the rest of us, the Fun Run begins at 9:10a.m. – bring the whole family. Make sure to wear something you’re willing to get dirty because you will be covered in color.

Interfaith Pride Service
Help make history with the first interfaith Pride service. I had the pleasure of speaking to one of the organizers of this event, Rev. Kym McNair.
“The thing about the interfaith service that I’m excited about is that the church (universal)…,” she begins. “There’s a history of how the church has perpetuated violence against queer folks, and to have an interfaith service (there), for me, reinforces what I believe is the all-encompassing love that god has to offer for everybody.”

Queer-Larious Comedy Show
Come support our very own Luz Michelle in the third annual Queer -Larious Comedy Show. Also starring Andrea Jones, Calvin Cato, Oscar Aydin, Garry Hannon and Veronica Garza.

Bring the whole family for a fun-filled day at Pride in the Park. There will be a drag story hour for the little ones, or big ones – we won’t judge. And remember to bring your family dog, cat, turtle, etc. because next is a pet pride parade (yes, really). Then once the pets are done, let your flag fly with a flag ceremony. And to close off the night, there will be a drag dance party.

A Celebration of Pride and Joy: Panel Discussion
Rev. Kym McNair is pulling double duty this month – she’s part of the organizing team and she’s also speaking at this event. She and others will talk about finding joy in the mists of pandemics (yes, plural – it’s not a typo).
“So there’s the pandemic of Covid-19 but there’s also the pandemic of hate,” she says. “And it will be good to be in conversation with friends around how we reclaim and hold onto joy in the midst of all the things that are happening in our world.”
