July / August 2022
Click on the magazine below to read our July/August 2022 issue. Or keep scrolling for individual articles as well as behind-the-scenes pictures, videos and information.
Our summer issue is all about community. Throughout the magazine, you’ll find stories about community engagement. From The Blazer’s incredible bonds with their customers to local artists and community leaders working together, and even or our own gratitude for our community’s embrace of Katonah Connect, this issue is filled with examples of people coming together to make our area an incredible place to live.
Our Covers
Designed by Creative Director Justin Negard, the front cover was designed to evoke the fun and beauty of summer using simple forms. Subtle uses of darker shades creates shadows and transforms very simple shapes into three dimensional objects.
Our back cover includes a gorgeous piece by Oscar Hammerstein, titled “Minos.” Hammerstein, the featured artist in our July/August issue, has created a series of paintings that visually express musical tempos. He explores what basic rhythms look like when overlaid with another rhythm that fits into the same space but was cut differently. *Note, our magazine is vertical in orientation, but “Minos” is intended to be viewed horizontally.

Phil Yu solves a speed cube in 15 seconds (with one hand!)
Have you read the story about how Phil Yu’s senioritis hobby eventually turned into the largest cubing warehouse in the country? The Cubicle began in Yu’s NYU dorm room, moved to Mt. Kisco and then Pleasantville before finding its current home in Elmsford. Although he’s retired from competitive cubing, he’s made it his life’s mission to elevate the sport. In the process, he’s developed an international cubing community.
A Day with the Interns
We are truly grateful to our interns, who bust their tails to help make Katonah Connect a reality. As you’ll see in this video, an internship with Katonah Connect isn’t just grunt work (Gia & Justin actually do most of that so the interns can learn) – it’s about gaining new skills and exploring our community. We provide hands-on experiences from writing and interviewing to photography and design. And sometimes, we even take them on day trips.
Wild Fig
We always have a great time hanging out in this beautiful local flower shop – the visuals and smells are hard to beat. Plus, owner Nichole Wilder has become an important witness to many incredible moments in our community, from the happy and sad to the celebratory and thoughtful.
“My work is an outlet for something beautiful – watching people pick flowers for others is probably one of the most beautiful things. Customers regularly come in because they’re thinking of someone, and it’s really wonderful to witness.”
The Leatherman
It was fascinating to learn more about this local legend who developed his own community of adoring fans, even though he rarely spoke. Not only did we research his life (as best we could – he’s a bonafide “Man of Mystery”), but we visited one of his local caves in Ward Pound Ridge. Here’s a video showing off that cave and the man himself. Special thanks to Pearl Jam for the excellent lyrics (yes this song is about our Leatherman).
A Day in Rhinebeck
While our local community is admittedly the best, you don’t have to travel too far to find other unique and interesting communities. Take Rhinebeck, for example. There are so many great things to enjoy in this town, but Millbrook Vineyards & Winery is one of our favorite spots. As you can see in our video, we’ve had harder days!
