Established in January 2024, Blue Barn Rescue is located in North Salem and mainly serves Westchester and Fairfield counties. However, we have adopters and surrenderers come from all over the tri-state area and Massachusetts. We primarily rescue guinea pigs, rabbits, poultry, and barnyard animals, and because our director is a veterinary technician, our focus is on animals who are sick, have special needs, seniors, or pregnant, as well as owner surrenders since those animals tend to be “dumped” when people become desperate. Animals who are deemed unadoptable due to age or medical issues live out their lives on our farm sanctuary. Adoptable animals are placed into loving forever homes. The need for rescue for this animal population is astronomical. So far this year, we have rescued about 230 animals; 96 live on site at the sanctuary, 22 live off site at our temporary rabbit sanctuary, 80 have been adopted into loving homes, and about 35 animals are in foster care awaiting their forever home.
Since we were established this year, we do not have any major donors or grants, and we have been primarily funding the rescue ourselves, which has been a major strain. Your donations will help us cover the cost of food, medical care, spaying, and neutering, which is very expensive and barely manageable. Plus, we still need to build a rabbit sanctuary on site to accommodate the large population of unadoptable rabbits, as well as a bachelor coop for roosters, as they are dumped constantly and will fight in the presence of hens. We are overwhelmed with requests for surrendering roosters, and we are having a hard time managing the six we have in the presence of our hens. We also need to build an additional shed row to house and quarantine barnyard animals.
